When Lego first confirmed that it would be taking a fan-designed Nightmare Before Christmas pitch from its “Lego Ideas” crowdsourcing platform and turning it into an official set, there were some interesting questions as to how the brick-builder was going to take the unique shapes and aesthetics of Henry Selick’s animated classic and render them in block form. Well, now we know, and the result is pretty genius.
Today Lego revealed the first look at the final design for its Nightmare Before Christmas set, based on the pitched design by Lego fan Simon Scott. Clocking in at 2,193 pieces, the set contains a trio of builds inspired by Halloween Town: the Town Hall, Jack’s house, and of course, the iconic Spiral Hill, complete with the moon floating perfectly in the background. The shapes of the builds really do a lot to capture the kooky, stylized designs of the buildings from the 1993 movie—even Spiral Hill is done with some clever techniques to create its unique curvature in Lego.
Of course, the set also comes with a ton of new blocky characters inspired by the film as well. There’s six standard minifigures, including Jack—who’s been given massive, stilt-esque legs to recreate his spindly proportions in the film—Sally, Santa Claus, as well as Lock, Shock, and Barrel. Joining them are a mini replica of Zero the Dog, shaped to capture his ghostly appearance in the film, and a brick-built version of the Mayor, who comes with two faces. The Lego Ideas Nightmare Before Christmas set will hit shelves from September 1, for a hefty $200. That’s the same day as the Lego Legend of Zelda set, so apologies to your wallets in advance. Maybe consider it a joint Halloween and Christmas gift to yourself?
