Ryan Reynolds and Chris Hemsworth Both Know Why Thor Is Crying in Deadpool & Wolverine

The stars who play Deadpool and Thor took to social media to tease one of the biggest secrets in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Two of the biggest stars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are teasing one of the franchise’s biggest questions, and we’re here for it. Early on in Deadpool & Wolverine, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is brought to the TVA where he sees an image on a monitor of himself, bloodied and battered, being cradled by Thor (Chris Hemsworth), who is crying. Wade begs for more information about it but Mr. Paradox tells him to forget it, saying it’s from the distant future. The question then comes up a few more times along the way.

By the end of the film, we still don’t know why Thor was crying, but two people who do know are Reynolds and Hemsworth. The former took to social media earlier this week to say “I know why Thor was crying. I can’t unknow it.” That was reposted a day later by Hemsworth who said “I can keep secrets too.” Here you can see both posts.

So we have a lot of thoughts here. The first is, whatever the answer, Marvel is not worried about it getting out. It may still be a huge spoiler, but the studio has been very liberal with showing it in a way it hasn’t with other things. Back in April, Disney shared about 10 minutes of Deadpool & Wolverine at CinemaCon and the Thor crying scene was in there. It was also part of the 40 minutes of footage the studio showed to the press right before the movie’s release. This is significant because, in that second block of footage, Henry Cavill’s cameo was specifically cut out. So, Disney and Marvel discussed which spoilers to show and which to conceal—and apparently Thor crying was okay.

Why is that? Well, we’d imagine there are a few reasons. One is that in the Multiverse, anything and everything is possible. So we may never see or find out why Thor was crying. It could be some random event from another timeline we never see. Or, it’s from a movie that hasn’t been written yet or is being written. Like Avengers: Secret Wars, in which both characters are likely to appear. Wade and Thor certainly share a certain level of humor so you can see them becoming friends. And if it’s from Secret Wars, maybe not even Marvel knows specifically what the reason will be, as it’s still very early in the process.

We really love that these stars are teasing us about it, though. Out of everything that happens in Deadpool & Wolverine, this is the biggest tease of what might be coming for the Merc With the Mouth. And that there’s some kind of rough plan in place is great to know.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now in theaters. Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for release in May 2027.
