Game-Breaking Bug Forces Star Wars Outlaws Players to Start Over

People ponied up $110 just to be saddled with busy work.

Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft’s big game taking place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, technically isn’t coming out until later this week, but anyone who paid $110 for early access or has a subscription to Ubisoft+ had the chance to start playing on Tuesday. However, thanks to a game-breaking bug, some PS5 players are being told to restart their game.

Outlaws players on the PS5 received an email Tuesday advising them of the newest update to the game, patch 1.000.002. The message advised players they might need to restart their games from the beginning in order to prevent further issues.

Here’s the email, as first seen by IGN:

To best experience the Outer Rim, we rolled out a maintenance to make sure everyone is playing the latest version of the game. As one of the players affected who had access to an older version of the game, we are aware you might be encountering some issues after this recent patch. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused…Once you’ve confirmed you have the latest version, please start a new save to fully enjoy Star Wars Outlaws as our team intended. If you continue on a prior save you will unfortunately face issues and progression blockers.

It’s unclear what bugs this patch would fix as players on Reddit have come across different issues while playing the game. One player noted that after a mission that took place in space, they were unable to land back on the planet Toshara. It does seem like the console versions have more of these issues than the PC version, according to Reddit threads. As someone who is playing through the game myself, I’ve only encountered small bugs and graphic hiccups, but nothing that would require a restart.

As for the game itself, Outlaws is sitting at 76% at OpenCritic, and io9’s review praised the game for creating a game where you can be a real scoundrel that uses wits and skills instead of a lightsaber and the Force. Players take the role of Kay Vess, a wannabe smuggler in the galactic underworld. She finds herself on the losing end of a double cross and now has a target on her back. Players will have to lie, cheat, and steal from the biggest crime syndicates in the galaxy: The Hutts, Crimson Dawn, and the Pykes.
